Kanye West Releases Deluxe Version of “Donda,” Including Previously Leaked Andre 3000 Collaboration
The album went from 27 to 32 tracks.
If you thought that that of Kanye West album Donda had a lot of songs, you ain’t seen nothing yet. On Sunday, the rapper / producer released the Deluxe Edition of Donda on streaming services offering additional tracks and guest features.
The latest edition of the 22 Grammy Award-winner’s tenth solo studio album expanded the roster of previous songs from 27 songs to 32 songs. The new tracks are “Life Of The Party”, “Up From The Ashes”, “Never Abandon Your Family”, “Keep My Spirit Alive Part 2” and “Remote Control Part 2”.
The most publicized new song is “Life Of The Party”, a song featuring Outkast rapper Andre 3000.
Left on the floor of the editing room for the official release on August 29, an unreleased version of “Life of the Party” has been leaked to the public by Duck. It was the result of a public feud between him and West that has been escalating since 2018.
However, fans have had an almost universally positive response to the song. On âLife of the Party,â Andre delivers a poignant line about his own mother’s death and how he had to overcome lifelong trauma without her presence. Donda is named after West’s late mother, Dr Donda West, died in 2008.
André raps on the song,
“Hey, Miss Donda
You run into my mama, please tell her I said ‘Say something’
I’m starting to believe that heaven’s trumpets don’t exist
No after-over, that’s it, it’s done,
If there is heaven, you would think they would let you talk to your son.
Last month, “Life of the Party” was added to Donda on West’s Stem Player, a portable device that lets you manipulate a song’s stems tracks and isolate certain musical elements while playing them.
West sells the player on his official website with Donda already loaded. It was one of three additional songs added to the songlist. The other two songs, “Up From the Ashes” and “Remote Control Part 2” also found their way into the deluxe version of the album.
The new version of these latest features Kid cudi and a verse previously deleted from Young thug.
KayCyy guests on “Keep My Spirit Alive Part 2” joining Griselda rappers Conway the machine and Westside Gunn. “Never give up on your family” was part of a previous iteration of Donda which was performed live in one of four album listening sessions, three of which were public, according to Variety.
West, who now legally calls himself “Ye,” held a listening session at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta in July, a second in August, and a third at Soldier Field in Chicago. Every time West played Donda with modified production elements, guest verses and different tracks.
In between the two Atlanta listening sessions, West set up a makeshift recording studio at the stadium to do reviews on the album and reportedly even slept there.
In addition to the five new tracks, the sequencing of the Donda Deluxe tracklist was also changed. For example, while “Donda Chant” remains the opening track, the next track, “Jail” with Jay Z, was later moved to the album, while “Hurricane”, West’s Billboard Number one R & B / Hip-Hop collaboration with The weekend and little baby took its place as the second song, followed by “Life of the Party”.
