Sheffield Wednesday news: Osaze Urhoghide’s future is shaping up amid European interest
After the fallout from his side’s relegation to League One, Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore opted to launch a major overhaul of his squad last month.
The likes of Tom Lees, Jordan Rhodes and Kadeem Harris were among a host of players who were released by the Owls.
However, Moore has granted a reprieve for Sam Hutchinson, Alex Hunt and Ciaran Brennan who are all slated to feature for Wednesday next season while Osaze Urhoghide has been offered a new contract.
Yet due to the fact that he was able to deliver a number of impressive displays in the league last season, the defender garnered considerable interest elsewhere earlier this year as Leeds United, Club Brugge, Crystal Palace and Watford were all linked with a swoop.
With the summer transfer window officially scheduled to open next week, an update is now available regarding Urhoghide’s future at Hillsborough.
According to Yorkshire Live, the 20-year-old is expected to leave on Wednesday when his current contract expires later this month after rejecting the club’s latest offer.
It is understood that Urhoghide has already planned his next move, but it has not yet been revealed which team he will join in the coming weeks.
After briefly falling out of favor during Tony Pulis’ tenure on Wednesday, the defender made nine league appearances following the club’s decision to appoint Moore as their new boss in March.
Joshua Cole of GIVEMESPORT says …
It is undoubtedly a blow for Wednesday who would have hoped to keep Urhoghide at the club for the foreseeable future.
A talented defender, the Dutchman produced two particularly impressive performances against Preston North End and Cardiff City last season as he helped his team keep the sheets clean in those two matches while registering WhoScored match scores of 7.05 and 7.07.
With the Owls set to play in a lower division after their relegation from the championship, it was always going to be difficult to convince Urhoghide to stay and so it’s no shock that he is about to move on to new pastures.
For the defender, he will aim to make considerable progress in terms of development by joining a club that can offer him the opportunity to play regular first-team football.
Following Urhoghide’s decision, Wednesday will now have to prioritize strengthening their options at center-back by August as their failure could hamper their chances of succeeding in level three next season.
